ATCHISON, Kan., December 8, 2015— MGP’s Metze’s Select has received significant praise by Whisky Advocate, one of the most prominent and widely read publications in the spirits industry. This limited edition Indiana straight bourbon whiskey, earned a rating of 91, which is near the top of the magazine’s rating scale that ranges from 60 to 100.
The rating was published in Whisky Advocate’s winter 2015 issue and Buying Guide and falls into the classification described as “Outstanding! One of the best for its style. Distinctive.” Of all the bourbons rated by Whiskey Advocate during the past two years, less than 25% received a rating above 90.
“MGP has a proud legacy of making world-class whiskeys,” said MGP President and CEO Gus Griffin. “Metze’s Select celebrates that heritage and showcases our distillation, maturation and formulation expertise. We are very pleased to receive this rating and feel it recognizes this expertise.”
In his review of Metze’s Select, which was produced at the company’s Lawrenceburg, Ind., distillery and released in October, Managing Editor Lew Bryson attributed the following qualities to this unique expression:
“Old school spicy nose, almost archetypal scents of sweet teaberry, cinnamon, and spearmint hard candy, with a firm, warm alcohol backing. True in the mouth: I’m tasting just what I smelled, all on a full bed of corn sweetness, floating off into a warm finish. Could it be more complex? Yes, but it’s beautifully balanced, and not the over-oaked shellac that passes for mature bourbon these days. If this was under $30 a bottle, I’d marry it.”
As noted by the magazine’s editorial staff, “The Whisky Advocate Buying Guide provides ratings of whiskies from around the world. All whiskies currently available for purchase are considered for evaluation; a special effort is placed on reviewing new products and comparing them to established ones… Whiskies are chosen for tasting from among those sent to our offices for review, and from targeted categories—a particular distillery, a particular age—we find of interest.”
Ratings by Whisky Advocate reviewers are intended to provide a relative comparison of quality with reference to both directly competing products and whiskies in general. This is important, because some products achieve greater balance, character, and complexity than others, according to the magazine.
